The Presidential Address of the Endocrine Society--endocrinology: orphan and Cinderella Science.

چکیده
Dr. Rawson, Ladies and Gentlemen: Life is full of strange facts. One of the strangest, I suppose, is that although I am deeply conscious of the honor of addressing this gathering, the prospect of having to do so has taken a dreadful toll of my 17-hydroxys and my catecholamines. What to do has been the problem. I was struck by one very appealing thought. It had the advantage of great originality and was one that you, as a captive audience, would have endorsed with unrestrained enthusiasm. The thought was to be the first holder of this office not to make a presidential address. The remission of symptoms of perturbation was wonderful but temporary. What disturbed me was the thought of all those people from Harvard who would be at this banquet through no choice of their own. Let me now assure them that with such a good showing, payment of their salaries next year will no longer remain a problem. The gnawing consciousness of the standards set by my predecessors on these occasions accentuated my private agony. One commented that he had sought deliverance in vain through an act of God. In the past few weeks, I found myself viewing the advent of an atomic holocaust in an entirely different light. The stockpiles of these horrendous weapons were reported to be plentiful and the prospects were excellent for such a thorough job that this meeting might have been postponed indefinitely. What happens?—brinksmanship declines. Then for a short spell I gained some encouragement

Presidential address: the Endocrine Society.
Last July when I assumed office I fully expected that my term as president of the Endocrine Society would be tranquil. Those serious internal problems of the Society that existed a few years ago had been effectively dealt with by my two predecessors, Dr. Liddle—and before him—Dr. Engel, and I was confident that there was so little that the president would be required to do during the year, that...

IN the course of a career most of us have multiple opportunities to contribute something to the Annual Meeting of The Endocrine Society. Usually these opportunities take the form of ten-minute papers concerning some recent discovery. At this moment I wish I could tell you about the discovery of a new steroid associated with high blood pressure, or the discovery of a new peptide hormone, or the ...

D OCTOR ROSS, MEMBERS AND GUESTS: Thank you for this splendid plaque and for your overgenerous words. They are among the few, evanescent, albeit cherished, rewards of the Presidency of our Society. In sharp contrast, the punishment for succumbing to the lure of this high office is implacable, demonic, and so severe that it cannot be borne alone: the Presidential address. This year, I have attem...

Special Guests, Fellow Endocrinologists, Ladies and Gentlemen: This is the 25th Annual Meeting of The Endocrine Society that I have been able to attend. Each one that I have attended has been better than the previous one, and provided me with new and important information which excited interesting and sometimes valid new and challenging ideas and concepts. I believe that this year, which marks ...

Since I am not a clinician I cannot address myself to the clinical syndrome, ESPAS (The Endocrine Society Presidential Address Syndrome), so eloquently described by my predecessor. Since I am not a comedian I cannot spontaneously or even with considerable forethought deliver clever "one-liners" to titillate you after a pleasant evening of camaraderie. Of course I do not feel the constraint of a...
